Testosterone Terrier

I regularly take the tram to and from the city center of Ghent and I’ve found that there is a pattern involving the occurrence of unusual events and my presence on the tram. The other day I was just on my way home after a long day of classes at Ghent University and I was allowing my brain a few moments of relaxation while I enjoyed the warmth of the tram car, watching people going about their day on the other side of the glass. We went slowly past the Kouter and that was when I saw something unusual.

Katerdag
Katerdag – A look into a week in the life of Dorian Gray.

In this photo, he’s sleeping in his home within a home; his cathouse. This is how I usually find him in the mornings, camped out in his little house or curled up cozily in the window. He purrs his distinct goeiemorgen (good morning) purr and climbs down from his sleeping place to await his breakfast. He has become a bilingual cat in the sense that he has learned to ignore both English and Dutch.

Mijn Belgische Verjaardag

Mijn Belgische Verjaardag

It’s hard to fathom that I’ve been living in Belgium for a year now, but it’s true. The year has gone unbelievably quickly and yet so many important things have happened in its course. Before we moved to Belgium, I envisioned myself writing many more blog entries to help create concrete memories of all the experiences. As I discovered, life takes up way more time. I feel that this one year mark in Belgium is a sort of milestone and it’s nice to look back and see all of the accomplishments that comprise the last year.

The cat adventure begins.

The cat adventure begins.

Since we moved into our new house, both of us have been looking forward to adding a cat to our household. We had been visiting a lot of animal shelters and making preparations in the house during the last month, and finally on Tuesday we were able to bring home our new cat. We adopted him from the animal shelter in Ghent. Unfortunately, he had an infection and had to stay at the shelter for a few weeks to recover, but that gave us enough time to make sure we were ready to bring him home. It seems like it was worth the wait because he is proving to be a very sweet cat. I decided to introduce him on OppositeOcean because I’m sure he will be a source of inspiration in future funny animal-related blog posts.

Horse milk, drink up.

Horse milk, drink up.

People consuming horse milk.  I had such a hard time wrapping my brain around this concept at first.  I don’t really know why it seems like such an oddity because cow milk is consumed widely without any associated strangeness.  After a Google confirmation and a bit of time I became more comfortable with the thought of people consuming horse milk but it wasn’t until today that I had the opportunity to actually try it for myself.  Today was the “Open Businesses” day in Flanders.  Many businesses opened their doors to the public, providing an opportunity for people to become acquainted with their products and services.  It was a beautifully warm day so we took our bikes and joined the ferocious fietsers (bicyclists) on the road to the Paardenmelkerij ‘t Kattenheye.
