For the love of hygiene.
On Wednesday it happened. The last straw was placed on the delicate little camel’s back and my toes crept right up to the very end of the ledge of sanity. I was washing my hands in one of the women’s restrooms in my faculty building and as I rinsed away the soap bubbles a girl exited a bathroom stall and came up to the sink.

Although freedom is rather temporary at this point, the taste of it is still sweet. I finally have some time to let my brain rest and to publish my first blog post of 2013! I can’t say that I have any interesting stories that will bring a smile, any weird new Dutch words, or any other interesting event in particular to talk about. My last 30+ days were dedicated to a whole-hearted effort to pass the University courses I was taking this semester. The most that I can say about them is that (for the most part) they are over. There are many things about Belgium that I don’t always get, but I really do not get the obsession that Belgians seem to have with The Simpsons. The lecture hall was filled with hundreds of students erupting in laughter, seemingly delighting in their common knowledge of every episode of The Simpsons that was ever produced.

3 weeks since classes started at the University. My brain is still intact but there is no definite amount of time to say how long it might remain so. I sometimes bike to my lectures (that is, if I deem the Belgian skies trustworthy) and about half-way through my ride to the city I encounter two lovely murals. They are painted on the sides of the building just at the base of the pedestrian bridge that crosses the water. It really must be one of my favorite spots in Ghent. I love how in this place nature and art seem to blend with industrialism.

It’s hard to fathom that I’ve been living in Belgium for a year now, but it’s true. The year has gone unbelievably quickly and yet so many important things have happened in its course. Before we moved to Belgium, I envisioned myself writing many more blog entries to help create concrete memories of all the experiences. As I discovered, life takes up way more time. I feel that this one year mark in Belgium is a sort of milestone and it’s nice to look back and see all of the accomplishments that comprise the last year.
