What the future looks like.

During the last weeks I’ve been adjusting to a new schedule at university and attempting to get everything organized to pave the path for another semester of learning. As a literature student, naturally I have a lot of things to read. The reading list is quite full and just seems to keep growing. Studying literature is quite different than some other courses since the reading must be done on a certain schedule or the lectures don’t hold as much meaning as they potentially could. Here’s a quick look into a fraction of the reading I will be doing in the coming months.

The curious case of the disappearing September.

A favorite from the September photos.

A favorite from the September photos.

September of 2013 is in the running to be the swiftest September of my 27 years. It has passed me by at an unbelievably fast speed. I barely noticed it had arrived since my head was buried in text books…

The middle went by just as quickly due to the long-awaited arrival of two American guests. In an effort to pack as much punch into their short visit, we saw and did as many things as possible. A side effect of this kind of behavior is that time tends to fly on by without anyone realizing. We drove from Amsterdam to Épernay and everywhere in between, trudging on despite the characteristic Belgian rain

Dutch, the mythical unicorn of European languages.

Dutch, the mythical unicorn of European languages.

Let’s be clear, unicorns unfortunately do not exist and neither does Dutch, my friends. Perhaps you’re saying “no way” and typing “does Dutch really exist” into the google search bar right now. If you click search, Wikipedia will try to inform you that it does indeed exist, but I’m going to tell you why it doesn’t.

10 things I’ve learned about studying at a Flemish university.

10 things I’ve learned about studying at a Flemish university.

On Tuesday I finished my last exam of the semester and it already feels like I’ve been done for weeks even though it’s only Friday. It’s a wonderful feeling now to choose whatever I want to do with my time instead of racing against the clock to try and remember one last piece of information that could prove crucial but then rarely ever does. This week is one comprised of two very contrasting extremes. Sunday night I was awake late, reading and rereading the syllabus for the exam that was to take place on Monday morning. I rushed home after that exam to study for the Spanish literature exam that was to take place on Tuesday. From Tuesday evening on I’ve been carefree and finally can do what I want without any feelings of guilt.

For the love of hygiene.

For the love of hygiene.

On Wednesday it happened. The last straw was placed on the delicate little camel’s back and my toes crept right up to the very end of the ledge of sanity. I was washing my hands in one of the women’s restrooms in my faculty building and as I rinsed away the soap bubbles a girl exited a bathroom stall and came up to the sink.
